Just Home is a community organisation based in Margaret River. We are committed to ensuring that our community has appropriate, accessible, low cost, secure and sustainable housing and shelter options for people who are on very low to moderate incomes, who may be vulnerable, disadvantaged and/or in crisis, or who may be experiencing homelessness.
An Overview of Our Efforts
AMR Community Action Plan for Housing Justice
Community members experiencing homelessness developed Just Home’s 10-Year Community Action Plan for Housing Justice to address and prevent homelessness and housing stress in AMR.
Our strategies for Housing Justice are:
- Emergency relief and welfare, including food, showers and laundry, and collecting camping gear, bedding and warm clothing.
- Strengthening support services, including increasing access to information, referrals and services in AMR and the South West, and peer support programs.
- Developing local crisis accommodation programs and infrastructure.
- Facilitating the development of diverse low-cost housing through State government, community housing and private housing partnerships.
- Mobilising a people’s movement to demand housing justice.
Housing Information and Referral Service
Just Home engages in advocacy for strong policy responses to homelessness and unaffordability of housing in Augusta-Margaret River. We helped inform the Shire of Augusta Margaret River Affordable Housing Strategy, and the Homelessness and Crisis Accommodation Policy. We regularly communicate with local, state and federal governments about homelessness in our community.
The Housing Information and Referral Service is guided by an Advisory Committee with representatives from AMR Shire, Just Home, Margaret River Professional Social Work Collective, and community members with personal experience of homelessness and housing stress. Each of these organisations recognises that homelessness is a serious issue in our community, and supports the model of the Housing Information and Referral Service.
The HIRS is supported by the following generous donors:
Just Home has a part-time employed Program Facilitator, Katie Gray. Katie works with community members who are experiencing homelessness or housing stress to access housing. The Program Facilitator can provide:
- Support to access and maintain public and private housing
- Support with public housing applications and applying for bond assistance
- Information and referrals to other services in the region
Please note, the Housing Information and Referral Service is not a crisis service. If you urgently need shelter, please contact Crisis Care on 1800 199 008
Developing Low-Cost Housing in AMR
Just Home is facilitating the development of low-cost housing in Augusta-Margaret River. We are working with local organisations to explore opportunities such as a community-owned caravan park, a low-cost eco-village, affordable and sustainable units, tiny houses and other creative options.
